These directories can be compared to the Yellow pages we all know, which were used to find contact information of different business people. Avoid low quality directories

There are many low quality directories in the internet that have minimum or no link value. Though they don't have many strict guidelines to follow, the directories don't actually help you much in promoting your website. The higher quality directories are better for directory submission because of its increased popularity and the type of websites listed with them. However they come with a price of strict submission guidelines. Make sure you strictly read and follow these guidelines while making submissions as the wrong submission can lead to your rejection from the directory, or may not give you as much online visibility as you had expected.

Unique descriptions help

Generally, it is better to submit your website in an older directory as directories that are less than a year old may not be trusted by search engines. Though PageRank can be a good indicator here, sometimes it can't be trusted. At times, you find directories with link value have no PageRank on its category pages and directories with no link value have a high PageRank on its category pages. While submitting to directories, do it while providing unique descriptions on each submission. Most directories provide you with a page to enter information about your company. However if all your directory pages have the same submission content, it reduces the value of the submission. Most directories permit using search phrases in links to your site, which proves beneficial to you. However make sure you don't use the same phrase for every submission; use variations of the same phrases to make maximum use of search engine optimization of these phrases.
